WARRINGTON Wolves head coach Jimmy Lowes feels there is a name missing from his team’s 2009 Super League fixture list - Widnes Vikings!

Super League’s new licence system was a hot topic for discussion at Wolves’ recent fans’ forum and the panel, including Lowes, was asked if they felt Vikings should have been brought into the top flight.

Lowes - insisting it was his personal opinion and not that of his club - felt the time was right for Wolves’ arch-rivals Widnes to have been given the green light rather than his former club Salford, where he was assistant coach.

He said: “I was surprised with the decision. I understand why they have gone for the Celtic route. We’ve had Challenge Cup Finals down in Cardiff and we had the Millennium Magic down there, so I can half-understand that decision.

“But I was disappointed for Widnes because they’ve got a fantastic local amateur set-up, they’ve got a fantastic stadium, they’re a very well-supported club and I’m also aware that Warrington versus Widnes is a big game. I thought Widnes should have got in.”

Well said Jimmy Lowes, it's about time that someone who knows something about the game regognised the role that Widnes has played, and will continue to play in the game.
Past events such as their exclusion at the start of SL to enable 'expansion' in London and Paris and the 'second relegation' spot to a;;ow Catalan to enter all appeared to be biased with Widnes as the easy victim. Together with other teams we were not allowed the luxury of a three year period of consolidation.
All this pales into insignificance when the chips are down and the licences are awarded, rather than taking a more holistic view where the shortcomings of all clubs could be objectively considered the easy option was again chosen with Widnes's recent financial problems given undue prominence. Subsequent news from several clubs awarded licences serves to underline how their applications were not suitably scrutinised.
Why should they, when to reject Widnes's was once again the easy option.
It is to the credit of the club that they have faced up to the fact that they have been outsmarted once again by those who profess to have the best interest of the gane at heart.
