Cause A Stink?

1:40pm Tuesday 8th April 2008

When a friend and I were best friends at Runcorn Parish school we got into many scrapes.

None more so than the day we bought some stink bombs. I think they cost sixpence or a shilling in the old money.

We decided to let the stink bombs off in the little tunnel that led from the Old Town.

We waited for the tunnel to be empty then let the tiny glass bottles fall then ran off, half way up the road we decided to go back to see if the stink bombs had worked.

Just as we entered the tunnel checking our handy work and were sniffing taking in the pungent aroma of our stink bombs, a policeman entered the other end of the tunnel.

Now in those days as children we were terrified of the police, so we ran as fast as we could thinking the policeman had guessed it was us who dropped the stink bombs.

In a scene that was reminiscent of a silent film, the policeman was soon chasing up behind us, his long legs catching us at every stride.

We ran for our lives and were just about to give in, as we reached Victoria Road suddenly the police man shot off in another direction he must have had another call or maybe he wasn't after us at all.

We did try to make our own stink bombs with a little chemistry set but only succeeded in accidentally poisoning a stray cat which made a mess in my friend's back garden.
